LARAMIE, WY – Weber State had trouble protecting some early leads, but the Wildcats kept the faith and got past host Wyoming to advance to the quarterfinals of the NIVC. The Wildcats (26-8) will play Tulsa in the next round, with date and site to be determined. The Cowgirls end their season at 22-9. Wyoming came from a 24-21 deficit to win Set 1, and Weber State almost stumbled again in Set 2, watching the Cowgirls come back from 18-12 to take a 24-23 lead. The Wildcats scored the next three points to even the match. In the fifth set, Weber State jumped ahead 9-6; a Wyoming error pushed the Wildcats up 11-7, and they finished it off with kills from Megan Gneiting and Rylin Roberts. Dani Nay had 22 kills for the Wildcats; Roberts had 15 kills and Aubrey Adams added 13 kills. Ashlyn Power closed with 62 assists, tying the NIVC single-game record, and Helena Khouri had 27 digs. For Wyoming, KC McMahon had 26 kills, and Halie McArdle added 13 kills. Carlie Fiske added 11 kills. Mackenzie Coates had 56 assists and Madi Fields had 36 digs. HAMILTON, NY – Colgate looked destined to get pulled into a five-set match, but a 10-1 run late in the fourth set changed the story as the Raiders topped Boston College in Round 1 of the NIVC. The Raiders (23-7) will play Tulane in Round 2, with the match set for 5 p.m. ET Saturday on Colgate’s home floor. Alex Stein and Alli Lowe each had 14 kills for the Raiders. Stein added 12 digs; Julia Kurowski had 42 assists, and Cami Carfino added 12 digs as Colgate hit .263 overall. The Eagles (20-12) got eight kills apiece from Clare Naughton, Jill Strockis and Amaka Chukwujekwu. Jane Dejarld had 28 assists and 10 digs. UT ARLINGTON 3, SAM HOUSTON STATE 0 (25-21, 25-23, 25-19)
ARLINGTON, TX – UT Arlington had just 12 hitting errors overall and hit .298, moving past Sam Houston State and into the quarterfinals of the NIVC. The Mavericks (20-13) will travel to South Dakota for the next round, taking on the Coyotes at 8 p.m. ET on Dec. 10. The Bearkats end their season at 19-14. UT Arlington got 13 kills from Kylie Jedlicka; Madison Hill added 10 kills. Jessica Stancliff and Kylee Kapp each had 16 assists, and Madelyn St. Germain had 12 digs. Sam Houston State was paced by 13 kills from Ashley Lewis; Samantha Rodgers had 12 kills and Breanne Chausse added 11 kills. Addison Miller had 11 digs. TCU 3, BOWLING GREEN 0 (26-24, 25-21, 25-13)
BOWLING GREEN, OH – TCU muscled up on defense and stormed to a sweep of host Bowling Green to advance to the quarterfinals of the NIVC. The Horned Frogs (11-17) hit .265 on the night and had an 11-4 edge in blocks; Katie Clark had 13 kills, with Julia Adams adding 11 kills. McKenzie Nichols came through with 42 assists, and Dani Dennison added 19 digs. The Falcons (20-13) had 11 kills from Katelyn Meyer. Isabelle Marciniak had 26 assists and Julia Walz added 13 digs. GEORGIA TECH 3, ALABAMA A&M 0 (25-8, 25-7, 25-15)
ATLANTA, GA – Georgia Tech set an NIVC record by hitting .545 overall in its sweep of Alabama A&M. The Yellow Jackets (22-8) will play again on their home floor against Troy in Round 2, with the match slated for 7 p.m. ET on Saturday. The Lady Bulldogs (20-15) got five kills from Maya Evans. Georgia Tech got 12 kills and 11 digs from Mariana Brambilla, 11 kills by Mikaila Dowd and 10 kills each from Kayla Kaiser and Julia Bergmann. Matti McKissock had 38 assists, and Bergmann punished the ball from the service line with seven aces. TULANE 3, NEW HAMPSHIRE 1 (25-17, 20-25, 25-18, 25-20)
HAMILTON, NY — Returning to the NIVC after reaching the championship match in the 2018 event, Tulane got off to a great start in moving past New Hampshire. The Green Wave (22-10) will play either Colgate or Boston College in Round 2, with the match set for Saturday at 5 p.m. ET. The Wildcats close their season at 17-10. Tulane got 13 kills from Lauryn Green and 11 kills by Yvette Burcescu. Kaylie McHugh added 12 digs. New Hampshire was paced by Kennedi Smith with 14 kills. Hannah Petke closed with 11 kills, while Logan Welti had 19 digs. TROY 3, NORTH CAROLINA A&T 0 (25-22, 25-20, 25-22)
ATLANTA, GA —Fueled by the hard-hitting swings of Cheyenne Hayes, Troy prevailed over North Carolina A&T in what was the first postseason game for both programs. The Trojans (23-9) advance out of Round 1 to face Georgia Tech or Alabama A&M in a match scheduled for Saturday at 7 p.m. ET. Hayes finished with 15 kills to go with six digs, and Caitlin Cooper added 10 kills. The Aggies (17-14) got eight kills each from Courteney Pitt and Edie Brewer, and seven kills by Fatimah Shabazz. Amara Anderson had 26 assists for Troy, and Lacey Jeffcoat added 12 digs. SOUTH DAKOTA 3, UNLV 0 (25-22, 25-19, 25-18)
VERMILLION, SD — Riding a steady and nearly error-free offensive attack, South Dakota moved past UNLV on Friday in Round 2 of the 2019 NIVC. The Coyotes (29-2) will face either UT Arlington or Sam Houston State in the quarterfinals next week. South Dakota had five attack errors total in the first two sets against UNLV and ended up hitting .369 overall with eight errors. Elizabeth Juhnke had 16 kills for the Coyotes, while Elizabeth Loschen and Sami Slaughter each had eight kills. Madison Jurgens closed with 36 assists and 10 digs, and Anne Rasmussen added 12 digs. The Rebels (20-11) got 17 kills from Thea Sweder, while Antonette Rolda had 20 assists. TULSA 3, SANTA CLARA 1 (25-22, 25-22, 23-25, 25-22)
LONG BEACH, CA – Tulsa prevailed in four hotly contested sets against Santa Clara, getting 12 kills with no errors from Callie Cook to advance out of Round 2 of the 2019 NIVC. The Golden Hurricane (17-15) has reached the quarterfinals and will play the winner of Friday’s match between Wyoming and Weber State for a chance to advance to the semifinals. The Broncos end their season with a record of 21-12. Tulsa trailed 14-13 in the fourth set but grabbed a 19-15 lead on Cook’s final kill of the night. At 23-20, Maggie Hembree’s kill gave the Golden Hurricane match point, and Tulsa clinched it on an error by the Broncos. Taylor Horsfall had 16 digs for Tulsa; Hannah Overmyer added nine kills. Julia Sangiacomo had 18 kills and 15 digs for Santa Clara; Allison Kantor added 13 kills, and Taylor Odom had 12 kills. TCU 3, MIAMI (OH) 2 (27-25, 23-25, 25-14, 18-25, 15-12)
BOWLING GREEN, OH – TCU pulled ahead late in the fifth set to advance past Miami (OH) in the first round of the 2019 National Invitational Volleyball Championship. The Horned Frogs (10-17) will play either Purdue-Fort Wayne or Bowling Green on Friday in Round 2. The RedHawks clse the season at 17-12. Miami jumped ahead early in sets 1 and 2; TCU fought back to win the first set and used a 10-1 run to take a 15-14 lead in the second set. It was tied as late a 19-19, but the Redhawks finished it off on a kill from Margaret Payne. In Set 3, Miami had two clusters of hitting errors which allowed TCU to comfortably pocket the set, but the RedHawks responded in the fourth set, closing it off with another kill from Payne. In the fifth set, TCU used a kill from Julia Adams to tie it at 12-all. An error from Miami and kills from Katie Clark and Adams proved to be the difference. Clark and Adams each had 13 kills; McKenzie Nichols had 40 assists for the Horned Frogs, and Dani Dennison finished with 25 digs. Elan McCall had 11 kills and 21 digs. For the RedHawks, Payne had 20 kills and Gaby Harper added 15 kills. UNLV 3, KANSAS CITY 1 (23-25, 25-20, 25-23, 25-13) VERMILLION, SD – UNLV dropped the first set against Kansas City but took control afterward, hitting .237 overall in advancing to Round 2 of the 2019 NIVC. UNLV will face either South Dakota or Central Michigan in Round 2. Alison French had 14 kills for the Rebels (20-10), and Mariena Hayden added 12 kills to go with her 14 digs. Playing their first-ever postseason match, the Roos (17-12) were paced by Melanie Brecka with 12 kills, and Alicia Harrington added 11. Alli Schomers had 33 assists. SAM HOUSTON STATE 3, HOUSTON 1 (16-25, 25-22, 25-22, 25-21) ARLINGTON, TX – Sam Houston rolled into Round 2 of the NIVC, getting 17 kills from Samantha Rodgers and 13 kills from Breanne Chausse. The Bearkats (19-13) will play either UT Arlington or UT San Antonio in Round 2. The Cougars end their season at 16-17. Addison Miller had 22 digs for Sam Houston State, and Ashley Lewis added 17 digs. Megan Duncan had 12 kills for Houston, and Abbie Jackson closed with 11 kills. Kelsey Childers added 35 assists. WEBER STATE 3, BOISE STATE 1 (25-17, 25-27, 25-19, 25-21) LARAMIE, WY – Weber State closed its match with Boise State hitting .245 overall, good enough to move past the Broncos and into Round 2 of the 2019 NIVC. The Bobcats (25-8) will play Wyoming or Northwestern State in Round 2. Boise State closes its season at 18-12. Dani Nay had 19 kills for Weber State; Rylin Roberts added 16 kills and Megan Gneiting had 11 kills. Ashlyn Power provided 46 assists. Lauren Ohlinger closed with 12 kills for Boise State, and Jessica Donahue added 10 kills. Shae Duffy came through with 10 kills. Danielle Boss added 43 assists, and Allison Casillas had 30 digs. BOWLING GREEN 3, PURDUE-FORT WAYNE 1 (25-12, 25-18, 17-25, 25-19) BOWLING GREEN, OH – Bowling Green doubled up Purdue-Fort Wayne in the first set and responded immediately after dropping the third set, moving through Round 1 of the 2019 NIVC after getting 18 kills from Katelyn Miller. The Falcons (20-12) will play TCU in Round 2, with the match set for Friday at 7 p.m. ET. The Mastadons finish their season at 18-15. Katie Crowe had 11 kills for Purdue-Fort Wayne; Elizabeth Fuerst added 10 kills. Rachael Crucis was strong on the back line with 22 digs. Isabelle Marciniak had 42 assists for Bowling Green, and Julia Walz added 20 digs. Katie Kidwell closed with 12 kills. SOUTH DAKOTA 3, CENTRAL MICHIGAN 1 (20-25, 25-15, 25-20, 25-19) VERMILLION, SD – South Dakota entered the 2019 NIVC with the highest RPI in the 32-team field and quickly lost the first set to Central Michigan, but the Coyotes South Dakota (28-2) will face UNLV in Round 2; the match is set for 3 p.m. ET Friday. The Chippewas ended their season at 21-9. The Coyotes were led by the 16 kills of Elizabeth Juhnke; Elizabeth Loschen had 12 kills and Sami Slaughter added 11 kills. Madison Jurgens had 49 assists and Anne Rasmussen closed with 27 digs. Central Michigan got nine kills apiece from Anna Erickson and Savannah Thompson; Megan Kern had 27 digs. WYOMING 3, NORTHWESTERN STATE 0 (25-22, 25-16, 25-19) LARAMIE, WY – Wyoming had a terrific effort offensively, hitting .357 overall and getting 17 kills from Tara Traphagan to move past Round 1 of the 2019 NIVC. The Cowgirls (22-8) will face Weber State in Round 2; the match is set for 8:30 p.m. ET on Friday. The Demons end their season with a record of 20-13. Mackenzie Coates had 33 assists for Wyoming, and Madi Fields added 17 digs. Northwestern State got 13 kills from Alexis Warren, and Hannah Brister closed with 10 kills. Cayman Sutton added 24 assists. UT ARLINGTON 3, UT SAN ANTONIO 2 (23-25, 25-19, 25-16, 21-25, 15-13) ARLINGTON, TX – Host UT Arlington fell behind 10-6 in the deciding fifth set but fought back with a 9-3 run to top UT San Antonio and advance from Round 1 of the 2019 NIVC. The Mavericks (19-13) will play Sam Houston State in Round 2; the match is set for 7:30 p.m. ET on Friday. The Roadrunners end their season at 16-14. With the score tied at 13-all in the fifth set, Bre Walp authored a kill for UTA for match point, and Walp followed with a solo block for the match winner. Kylie Jedlicka had 15 kills and 16 digs for the Mavs; Madison Hill added 12 kills, and both Walp and Brooke Townshend had 11 kills. Madelyn St. Germain had 23 digs. Brianna McCulloch had 17 kills, 10 digs and just two errors for UT San Antonio. Kirby Smith had 13 kills and 11 digs, and Courtney Walters chipped in with 36 assists.
