SOUTH DAKOTA 3, UNLV 0 (25-22, 25-19, 25-18)
VERMILLION, SD — Riding a steady and nearly error-free offensive attack, South Dakota moved past UNLV on Friday in Round 2 of the 2019 NIVC. The Coyotes (29-2) will face either UT Arlington or Sam Houston State in the quarterfinals next week. South Dakota had five attack errors total in the first two sets against UNLV and ended up hitting .369 overall with eight errors. Elizabeth Juhnke had 16 kills for the Coyotes, while Madison Harms and Sami Slaughter each had eight kills. Madison Jurgens closed with 36 assists and 10 digs, and Anne Rasmussen added 12 digs. The Rebels (20-11) got 17 kills from Mariena Hayden, while Antonette Rolda had 20 assists. TROY 3, NORTH CAROLINA A&T 0 (25-22, 25-20, 25-22) ATLANTA, GA —Fueled by the hard-hitting swings of Cheyenne Hayes, Troy prevailed over North Carolina A&T in what was the first postseason game for both programs. The Trojans (23-9) advance out of Round 1 to face Georgia Tech or Alabama A&M in a match scheduled for Saturday at 7 p.m. ET. Hayes finished with 15 kills to go with six digs, and Caitlin Cooper added 10 kills. The Aggies (17-14) got eight kills each from Courteney Pitt and Edie Brewer, and seven kills by Fatimah Shabazz. Amara Anderson had 26 assists for Troy, and Lacey Jeffcoat added 12 digs. TULANE 3, NEW HAMPSHIRE 1 (25-17, 20-25, 25-18, 25-20) HAMILTON, NY — Returning to the NIVC after reaching the championship match in the 2018 event, Tulane got off to a great start in moving past New Hampshire. The Green Wave (22-10) will play either Colgate or Boston College in Round 2, with the match set for Saturday at 5 p.m. ET. The Wildcats close their season at 17-10. Tulane got 13 kills from Lauryn Green and 11 kills by Yvette Burcescu. Kaylie McHugh added 12 digs. New Hampshire was paced by Kennedi Smith with 14 kills. Hannah Petke closed with 11 kills, while Logan Welti had 19 digs. GEORGIA TECH 3, ALABAMA A&M 0 (25-8, 25-7, 25-15) ATLANTA, GA – Georgia Tech set an NIVC record by hitting .545 overall in its sweep of Alabama A&M. The Yellow Jackets (22-8) will play again on their home floor against Troy in Round 2, with the match slated for 7 p.m. ET on Saturday. The Lady Bulldogs (20-15) got 5 kills from Maya Evans. Georgia Tech got 12 kills and 11 digs from Mariana Brambilla, 11 kills by Mikaila Dowd and 10 kills each from Kayla Kaiser and Julia Bergmann. Matti McKissock had 38 assists, and Bergmann punished the ball from the service line with seven aces. TCU 3, BOWLING GREEN 0 (26-24, 25-21, 25-13) BOWLING GREEN, OH – TCU muscled up on defense and stormed to a sweep of host Bowling Green to advance to the quarterfinals of the NIVC. The Horned Frogs (11-17) hit .265 on the night and had an 11-4 edge in blocks; Katie Clark had 13 kills, with Julia Adams adding 11 kills. McKenzie Nichols came through with 42 assists, and Dani Dennison added 19 digs. The Falcons (20-13) had 11 kills from Katelyn Meyer. Isabelle Marciniak had 26 assists and Julia Walz added 13 digs. UT ARLINGTON 3, SAM HOUSTON STATE 0 (25-21, 25-23, 25-19) ARLINGTON, TX – UT Arlington had just 12 hitting errors overall and hit .298, moving past Sam Houston State and into the quarterfinals of the NIVC. The Mavericks (20-13) will travel to South Dakota for the next round, taking on the Coyotes at 8 p.m. ET on Dec. 10. The Bearkats end their season at 19-14. UT Arlington got 13 kills from Kylie Jedlicka; Madison Hill added 10 kills. Jessica Stancliff and Kylee Kapp each had 16 assists, and Madelyn St. Germain had 12 digs. Sam Houston State was paced by 13 kills from Ashley Lewis; Samantha Rodgers had 12 kills and Breanne Chausse added 11 kills. Addison Miller had 11 digs. COLGATE 3, BOSTON COLLEGE 1 (25-19, 19-25, 25-19, 25-19) HAMILTON, NY – Colgate looked destined to get pulled into a five-set match, but a 10-1 run late in the fourth set changed the story as the Raiders topped Boston College in Round 1 of the NIVC. The Raiders (23-7) will play Tulane in Round 2, with the match set for 5 p.m. ET Saturday on Colgate’s home floor. Alex Stein and Alli Lowe each had 14 kills for the Raiders. Stein added 12 digs; Julia Kurowski had 42 assists, and Cami Carfino added 12 digs as Colgate hit .263 overall. The Eagles (20-12) got eight kills apiece from Clare Naughton, Jill Strockis and Amaka Chukwujekwu. Jane Dejarld had 28 assists and 10 digs. WEBER STATE 3, WYOMING 2 (26-28, 26-24, 25-18, 16-25, 15-11) LARAMIE, WY – Weber State had trouble protecting some early leads, but the Wildcats kept the faith and got past host Wyoming to advance to the quarterfinals of the NIVC. The Wildcats (26-8) will play Tulsa in the next round, with date and site to be determined. The Cowgirls end their season at 22-9. Wyoming came from a 24-21 deficit to win Set 1, and Weber State almost stumbled again in Set 2, watching the Cowgirls come back from 18-12 to take a 24-23 lead. The Wildcats scored the next three points to even the match. In the fifth set, Weber State jumped ahead 9-6; a Wyoming error pushed the Wildcats up 11-7, and they finished it off with kills from Megan Gneiting and Rylin Roberts. Dani Nay had 22 kills for the Wildcats; Roberts had 15 kills and Aubrey Adams added 13 kills. Ashlyn Power closed with 62 assists, tying the NIVC single-game record, and Helena Khouri had 27 digs. For Wyoming, KC McMahon had 26 kills, and Halie McArdle added 13 kills. Carlie Fiske added 11 kills. Mackenzie Coates had 56 assists and Madi Fields had 36 digs. |
